Frequently Asked Questions

How many sounds can I layer at once?
You can play up to 9 sounds simultaneously in your Active Mix, each with its own independent volume. Layering a base sound like rain with a texture like distant thunder or a fireplace crackle is a common way to build a richer, more natural-feeling ambience.
Are these real recordings or synthesized audio?
All sounds are synthesized live in your browser using the Web Audio API rather than streamed audio files. That keeps the page fast to load, lets every sound loop seamlessly forever with no audible seam, and means everything works offline once the page has loaded.
Can I save and reuse my favorite mixes?
Yes — build a mix, give it a name in the My Mixes panel, and save it. Saved mixes are stored in your browser's local storage and can be reloaded with a single click any time you come back.
What is the Sleep Timer for?
It automatically fades out and stops your entire mix after a set duration (15 minutes to 2 hours), so you can fall asleep to a soundscape without it playing all night. Volume fades gradually in the final minute rather than cutting off abruptly.
Do I need headphones for the binaural beats?
Yes, headphones are required for binaural beats specifically — each ear needs to receive a slightly different frequency for your brain to perceive the beat effect, which doesn't work through a single shared speaker.
How do the category filters work?
The sidebar filters (All, Nature, Music, Noise, Urban) narrow the sound grid to just that category, so you can browse a smaller, more relevant set instead of scrolling through everything. Your Active Mix and any playing sounds aren't affected by filtering — you can still layer sounds from different categories together.
Can I share a mix with someone else?
Yes — use Share Current Mix to generate a link that encodes your exact sound combination and volumes. Anyone who opens that link will hear the same mix without needing to rebuild it manually.
Why does a sound stop when I switch browser tabs?
It shouldn't — audio is designed to keep playing in the background tab. If sound does cut out, check whether your browser's tab-throttling or battery-saver settings are suspending background audio, which some mobile browsers do aggressively.
Is the Sound Mixer free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, completely free with no account, email, or payment required. Every sound, the mixer, saved mixes, and the sleep timer are all available immediately.
Does the mixer work offline?
Yes — as a Progressive Web App, once you've loaded the page once, the sound engine and all synthesized sounds continue working without an internet connection, including saved mixes stored locally.
