Guided Breathing — Frequently Asked Questions
What does this guided breathing page actually do?
It gives you an animated ring that expands and contracts in sync with a chosen breathing pattern — inhale, hold, exhale, and (on some techniques) a second hold — so you can follow the rhythm with your eyes instead of counting in your head. Pick a technique, optionally add a background sound and a voice guide, then press Begin Session.
Is it free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, it's completely free with no account, email, or paywall. Your chosen technique, sound, cycle count, and voice preference are simply remembered in your browser for next time.
Is any of my breathing data sent to a server?
No. This site has no accounts and no backend — session settings and any mood check-ins you save are stored locally in your browser's storage, not on a server, and nothing is tracked or shared.
Which breathing technique should I start with?
Box Breathing (4-4-4-4) is the easiest starting point because every phase is the same length. If you specifically want help falling asleep, try 4-7-8 instead; if you need fast relief from a stress spike, the Physiological Sigh works in under a minute.
How many cycles or minutes should I do?
The session panel lets you choose 5, 10, 20, or unlimited cycles. Five cycles (roughly a minute or two, depending on the technique) is enough to notice a shift; longer sessions of 5-10 minutes are common before sleep or during a stressful afternoon.
Can I add background sound or voice guidance?
Yes. The setup panel has a Background Sound dropdown (rain, ocean, forest, or brown noise) and a Voice Guide toggle that speaks each phase — "inhale," "hold," "exhale" — aloud so you don't need to watch the screen the whole time.
How is this different from the Breathing Guide or Breath Lab pages?
This page is the interactive pacer — pick a technique and follow the animated ring in real time. Breathing Guide is the written reference explaining each technique and its background, Breath Lab lets you build and test custom timing ratios, and Breath Stats tracks your session history over time.
What if I get lightheaded or uncomfortable during a session?
Stop and breathe normally — some techniques, especially Wim Hof and other retention-based patterns, can cause lightheadedness if pushed too far. Press Escape or the Exit button at any point to leave the session immediately; there's no penalty for stopping early.
Can I use guided breathing on mobile, and does it work offline?
Yes, the page is fully responsive and works on phones and tablets. The site also registers a service worker, so once you've loaded it, the breathing tool keeps working without an internet connection.
What's the difference between a "hold" and a "sigh" in these patterns?
A hold pauses your breath with your lungs full or empty for a set count, which is what gives Box Breathing and 4-7-8 their calming effect. A sigh, used in the Physiological Sigh technique, is a double inhale (one deep breath followed by a short top-up) immediately followed by a long, slow exhale, which offloads carbon dioxide quickly and tends to work faster for acute stress.
