Crinkle

A core term in the ASMR vocabulary — explained for newcomers and curious listeners.

In short Crinkle is the bright, crackling sound of paper, cellophane or plastic being slowly handled. It is one of the highest-frequency ASMR triggers and a favourite of viewers who like crisp textures.

What it means

Crinkle sounds come from scrunching, folding or slowly compressing thin packaging material — cellophane wrap, plastic bags, candy wrappers, tissue paper. The trigger is acoustically dense, packed with rapid high-frequency events that the ear interprets as bright and fizzing. Some listeners feel tingles almost immediately from a good crinkle video, while others prefer it as background ambience during work or study. Many ASMRtists produce 'unboxing' roleplays specifically to showcase crinkle sounds, opening shrink-wrapped products in front of a binaural microphone. Crinkle pairs naturally with tapping, scratching and page turning in mixed-trigger assortments.

Common examples

  • Slow handling of crumpled cellophane in front of a binaural mic
  • Unboxing video focused on plastic wrap removal
  • Holiday wrapping-paper folding scene
