Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response
A core term in the ASMR vocabulary — explained for newcomers and curious listeners.
What it means
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response is the formal name for the phenomenon better known as ASMR. The term was coined in 2010 by Jennifer Allen, an early member of an online community that had been searching for a label for the sensation. 'Autonomous' reflects that the response happens involuntarily, 'sensory' acknowledges its physical character, and 'meridian response' was chosen as a neutral, slightly clinical phrase to suggest a peak experience without medicalising it. Academic research — notably by Poerio, Smith and others — has since used the same term, and ASMR is now widely studied as a measurable response involving lowered heart rate, increased skin conductance and characteristic patterns of brain activity.
