Tingles
A core term in the ASMR vocabulary — explained for newcomers and curious listeners.
What it means
Tingles are the most recognised feature of the ASMR response. Listeners describe them as gentle waves of static, fizz or warm sparks that begin at the crown of the head and ripple down the neck, shoulders and upper back. Although the sensation is private, surveys consistently report the same physical pattern. Functional imaging studies show that tingles correlate with increased activity in brain regions associated with reward, empathy and emotional regulation. Tingles tend to coincide with a slower heart rate and a feeling of mental calm. Not everyone experiences them, and responsiveness can fade with repeated exposure to the same trigger — a habituation effect that experienced viewers manage by rotating between different ASMRtists and trigger styles.
