Mouth Sounds

A core term in the ASMR vocabulary — explained for newcomers and curious listeners.

In short Mouth sounds are intimate close-mic noises made with the lips, tongue and teeth — clicks, smacks, soft kisses and slow chewing — that produce strong tingles for some and discomfort for others.

What it means

Mouth sounds are among the most polarising triggers in ASMR. Made with the lips, tongue, teeth and saliva, they include light smacking, slow tongue clicks, soft inaudible whispers and 'sk-sk' sounds. The effect is created by the proximity of the source to the microphone, which captures every minute movement and produces a feeling of someone being inches away. For many listeners these sounds are the strongest tingle trigger available; for others they cross into uncomfortable territory and even produce misophonic reactions. Most ASMRtists clearly label mouth-sound videos so viewers can opt in or out.

Common examples

  • Slow, deliberate tongue clicks on a binaural mic
  • Mixed mouth-sound assortment with kisses and 'sk' sounds
  • Inaudible whispered phrases close to the microphone
