Breathing Lab — Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does the Breathing Lab do?
It lets you build a fully custom breathing pattern instead of using a fixed one. You set the length of each phase — inhale, hold, exhale, hold — with sliders, watch a visual pattern bar and cycle timer update live, then run the pattern in a guided breathing session with an animated ring and phase counter.
Is Breathing Lab free, and do I need to sign up?
Yes, it's completely free with no account and no signup. Every pattern you build or save is stored locally in your browser rather than on a server, so there's nothing to register and nothing to lose access to.
Where are my saved patterns stored — are they sent anywhere?
Saved patterns live entirely in your browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded, tracked, or shared with a server. If you clear your browser data or switch devices, use the Export button first to save your patterns as a file you can re-import later.
How is Breathing Lab different from the regular Breathe page?
The Breathe page offers a handful of ready-made guided patterns you start with one click. Breathing Lab is the builder — you set your own inhale, hold, exhale and hold durations, save named variations, and export or import them, which is useful once you've found timings that suit your own lung capacity or a technique from a class or app.
What do the presets like Box, 4-7-8, and Equal actually mean?
The numbers describe seconds for inhale-hold-exhale-hold. Box 4–4 (4-4-4-4) is even on all four phases and is often used for calm, steady focus. 4-7-8 uses a long hold and a longer exhale and is popular before sleep. Calm and Equal drop the holds for a simpler two-phase rhythm, while Energize favors a shorter exhale to feel more alert.
Do I have to use both hold phases?
No. Both hold sliders can be set to 0 if you only want an inhale-exhale rhythm — the pattern bar and cycle timer update to reflect whichever phases you actually use, and a zero-length hold is simply skipped during the session.
How is the cycle time and cycles-per-minute figure calculated?
It's the sum of your four slider values in seconds, shown as the total cycle length, with an approximate cycles-per-minute figure calculated from that total. Shortening any phase shortens the cycle and raises the cycles-per-minute count; lengthening a phase does the opposite.
Can I export a pattern and share it or move it to another device?
Yes. The Export button downloads your saved patterns as a JSON file, and the Import button lets you load a previously exported file back in — on the same device after clearing storage, or on a different device or browser entirely.
Does Breathing Lab work offline or on mobile?
Yes to both. The page and its scripts run entirely in your browser once loaded, so it keeps working without a connection, and the slider layout and breathing ring are designed to work on phone and tablet screens as well as desktop.
Why would I want a custom pattern instead of a standard one like box breathing?
Standard patterns are a good starting point, but comfortable breath length varies by person and by goal — a longer exhale than inhale tends to feel more settling, while more even phases feel more neutral and sustainable for longer sessions. Building your own pattern lets you fine-tune the rhythm to what actually feels sustainable for you rather than forcing a fixed count.
